The two views below, taken from TUPY Brazil's own factory video, show what is inside the fitting and how it is made up on site.

Tightening the nut locks the internal rings onto the body of the pipe and the joint seals in seconds — no threading, no welding and no press tool. In the photograph the nut of a 2½ in fitting (marked 2 1/2 on the body) is being made up with an ordinary spanner.

TUPY union seat types and how they differ

A union seals on its seat, not on the thread. The seat type therefore decides how often the joint can be broken and remade, how much angular misalignment it will take, and which duty it suits.

1. Brass conical seat

  • The seat is made from 99.9% pure brass and gives a reliable seal, with no lead or other substances harmful to health.
  • The spherical seat form allows the two ends to be set at an angle to one another; up to 6° of angular movement between the ends is permitted.
  • The parts of this type of union are interchangeable between fittings.
  • It can be broken and remade without losing its seal, as long as the cones have not corroded.

2. Iron-to-iron conical seat

  • The iron-to-iron cone geometry is tighter, so no angular movement is allowed at the male or the female end.
  • Its parts are not interchangeable between fittings.
  • TUPY does not recommend re-using this type of union; the seal is not guaranteed once the joint has been broken.
  • It is the most economical option to install and to run.

3. Flat seat with a gasket

  • The standard sealing gasket is made from hydraulic board (Nitripack).
  • On systems that vibrate, the gasket absorbs the movement and keeps the joint from leaking.
  • Because the sealing face is flat, no angular movement is allowed at the male or the female end.
  • Its parts are interchangeable, and the gasket should be replaced whenever the joint is remade.
  • Other gasket materials such as rubber can be used for special sealing duties; that choice should be agreed with TUPY application or product engineering.

The maximum hydrostatic test pressure for a union is 37.5 bar, where the other fittings are tested to 100 bar. The full torque and tensile strength table for every size is in the installation guide.
